JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary

The pharmacy technician is integral in the processing and preparation of prescriptions.  Working under the supervision of a pharmacist, the technician performs data entry, third-party (insurance) adjudication, inventory selection and prescription packaging tasks.  The technician directly interacts with patients, provider offices, insurance companies and wholesalers on a daily basis.  Attention to detail and strong customer service skills are essential traits for a successful pharmacy technician.

Education and/or experience

  • High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate);
  • Certificate for completing an accredited Pharmacy Technician program;
  • Current licensure as a Certified Pharmacy Technician licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Three (3) years of experience as a pharmacy tech in a retail pharmacy environment preferred.

Essential Functions

  • Customer Service:
    • Answer telephones, responding to questions or requests.
    • Assist customers by answering simple questions, locating items or referring them to the pharmacist for all medication information.
  • Prescription Processing:
    • Receive written prescription or refill requests and verify that information is complete and accurate.
    • Enter and verify accuracy of patient demographics, insurance, and allergies into pharmacy management system.
    • Process prescriptions in pharmacy management system.
    • Prepare prescribed medications and affix labels.
  • Inventory Control:
    • Receive and store incoming supplies, verify quantities against invoices, and inform supervisors of stock needs and shortages.
    • Maintain invoices and ensure follow-through on shortages, credits, returns, etc.
    • Assist in maintaining accurate inventory records.
    • Establish and maintain relationships with vendors.
  • General Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Clean, and help maintain, equipment and work areas, and sterilize glassware according to prescribed methods.
    • Operate cash register and complete accurate deposits daily;
    • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive health and business information; HIPAA
