SUMMARY

Works under the supervision of the dentist while supporting dental care delivery by preparing treatment room, patient, instruments, and materials. Assists dentist during examinations and procedures.

Education and/or experience

Certificate in Dental Assistant Program or a combination of education and experience

Competencies

  • Computer experience;
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Diplomacy, tact and a positive approach to problem solving
  • Organizational skills
  • Confidentiality a must

 

Essential Functions

  1. Assists dentist & hygienist during examination and treatment of patients.
  2. Maintain close communication with dental team to ensure that the more difficult/involved patient treatments/procedures have adequate support and experience to ensure positive outcomes, and take lead in those procedures when necessary.
  3. Prepares patient, sterilizes and disinfects instruments, sets up instruments trays, prepares materials and assist dentist & hygienist during dental procedures.
  4. Takes and records medical and dental histories and vital signs of patients.
  5. Expose dental diagnostic x-rays.
  6. Pours, trims, and polishes study casts, fabricates custom impressions trays from preliminary impressions, cleans and polishes removable appliances, and fabricates temporary restorations.
  7. Assists dentist in management of medical and dental emergencies.
  8. Instruct patients in oral hygiene and plaque control programs.
  9. Provide postoperative instructions prescribed by dentist.
  10. Record treatment information in patient records.
  11. Greet patients as they arrive, verify records, direct patients to appropriate areas, and answer telephone calls as needed.
  12. Prepares exam rooms with equipment and supplies as needed for examination procedures; cleans and restocks examining rooms as necessary.
  13. Maintains dental supply inventory.
  14. Attends and participates in Health Center conferences and meetings as requested.
  15. Provide support to student interns by way of initial orientation and routine care to ensure that each patient served by the dental clinic receives the highest quality care possible.
  16. Other duties as required.
